Fujitsu – Siemens Netbooks

Fujitsu Siemens was founded in 1999 as a joint venture between Fujitsu Ltd, of Japan and Siemens AG and was created to build computer products. Just recently Fujitsu bought out the Siemens portion of the company to become Fujitsu Technology Solutions. They currently focus on all sectors of the computer business and have products that include large IT systems, laptops, netbooks and handhelds. They have entered the netbook market and have a flagship product called the Amilo Mini. The first of the Fujitsu Siemens netbooks joins a long line of laptop sized Amilo products and carries over some of the same features in a slightly smaller package. The best place to find these cheap Fujitsu Siemens netbooks would be online as there are many retailers offering them for sale. They offer a great value for the wide breadth of features they offer.

Storage Capacity - The Fujitsu Siemens netbooks feature a choice of hard drive capacities. The units can be configured with a 60GB, 80GB or 120GB hard drive and provide for a lot of storage for your netbook needs. The Fujitsu Siemens netbooks don’t offer a solid-state drive as an option but by allowing you a choice of capacities on the hard drive, they enable you to configure the netbook for your needs.

Keyboard - The Fujitsu Siemens netbooks feature a smaller keyboard than their standard laptops but it is still a very generous size for a netbook. Also because of the thin size of the netbook, there is very little bounce on the keys and this makes typing easier. There is also a standard mouse touchpad located below the keyboard with the familiar right / left mouse buttons on either side of the touchpad.

Battery Life - The Fujitsu netbooks are delivered with a standard 4-cell battery. This lithium-ion battery is substantial at 2200 mAh and should give you a little bit over 4 hours of use on a full charge. This time will vary depending on your activities, but this is average. The Fujitsu netbooks also offer a 6-hour battery as an option and this will extend your use to well over 8 hours. This can be a handy accessory for those longer trips where you need the extended power.

Operating System - The Siemens netbooks come standard with a copy of Windows XP Home Edition installed. It also has Service Pack 3 already applied as well. The Siemens netbooks come with a copy of Adobe Acrobat installed for viewing PDF documents and a version of Cyberlink YouCam for use with the built-in camera. This makes connecting to friends and family easier when you are using the webcam.

CPU and Graphics - The Fujitsu Siemens netbooks are based on the powerful Intel Atom N270 processor. This chipset is designed for low power netbook applications and runs at a blazing 1.6 GHz. The processor is powerful enough for all your netbook needs and can handle large computational programs as well as full motion video for when you want to relax and enjoy a movie or use the webcam. The Fujitsu Siemens netbooks are also shipped with 1GB of RAM, which provides plenty of space for all of your programs and games. The graphics chipset features an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 and provides plenty of power for those graphics-hungry applications.

Connectivity - The Fujitsu Siemens netbooks offer a very wide universe of connectivity. There are two high-speed USB connections that allow you to attach any of your peripherals to the Amilo netbooks. This is important in case you want to add a keyboard or additional memory to the unit in the form of an external hard drive for added space. There are also standard VGA and Ethernet connections as well on the Amilo netbooks that allow you to connect it to a wired LAN if you are in an office and expand the screen size by adding a monitor to the unit. The Fujitsu Siemens netbooks also feature internal Wifi for connection to the network and this connection can be made through any 802.11 b/g network. Even though the Amilo mini netbooks feature an internal microphone, there are additional external connections for a microphone and headphones to make it easy to listen to your music in private or upgrade the microphone if you choose. The Fujitsu Siemens netbooks also include a 4-in-1 memory slot to make transferring content from a memory card easy. This universal slot will support all of the major standards including SC/SDHC, MS. MSPRO and MMC memory. This way no matter what device you want to transfer data to you’ll be fine. The Fujitsu Siemens netbooks also provide a Bluetooth connection for expandability. This is a fully compliant 2.1 version of the Bluetooth standard and allows you to connect up any Bluetooth peripheral you want to the netbook. Lastly, the Fujitsu Siemens netbooks feature a standard Express Card Slot. This is fairly unique to the Amilo mini netbooks and not a lot of other competitors have a slot on their netbooks. Having this slot means that you have the ultimate in flexibility when it comes to expansion and can use any Express Card available.

Additional Features - In addition to the features already mentioned, the Amilo mini netbooks offer a choice of colors for their netbooks. This is accomplished through a group of snap-on covers. These covers are available in a variety of colors and you can change the look of your netbook by simply snapping one of these on. This is a nice alternative to the other netbooks on the market that have a solid color cover or use a sticker. With the Amilo mini netbooks you can change the color of your netbooks as often as you like. It also comes in handy if you scratch the cover since you can easily just snap another one on. The Fujitsu Siemens netbooks feature an internal 1.3 megapixel camera that is mounted in the display. This makes it very easy for you to do web conferencing or chatting with your friends using the webcam. The final feature the Fujitsu Siemens netbooks offer is called “quite mode” and allows you to hit one button that slows the cooling fan down. This will reduce the noise of the netbook to a whisper quiet level for those times where you really need to concentrate. Considering all the features the Fujitsu Siemens netbooks offer in their compact package, they represent a great value for their modest sale price.
