According to Phil Brown, the general manager for mobile computing at Samsung UK the company may consider using AMD processor chips in its laptops but it will be using Intel chips in is netbooks for the foreseeable future.
In the last few years Samsung has become a major player in the mobile computing sector and is one of the big success stories in its market.
Brown advised, whilst talking at a round-table event for journalists, that although the company had focus on using Intel processors in its laptops it would be considering using AMD processor in its laptops and netbooks at some point in the future, which could lead to further use after that.
Brown advised “Historically we were Intel. This year we had two products on the AMD platform…and whilst we never progressed that range any further, we have worked with AMD and could do so again in the future. Our current range doesn’t have AMD in it but that doesn’t mean to say that AMD might not resurface on our products.”
Brown also confirmed that the company had no current plans to stop using the highly successful atom processors from Intel in terms of its netbook division.
He advised “At the moment Intel is our chosen partner for netbooks for the foreseeable future.”
In order to provide consumers with huge number of options in the small form-factor sector, Samsung is hoping that its new N-series range of netbooks will give them everything they need. Although the netbook laptops are limited in functionality it is Browns belief that customers still want a choice of netbooks to pick from.
Brown advised “Netbooks have caught the imagination of consumers in various different guises and by offering wide variety we’ve seen positive results. So we believe that consumers do want variety. Customers are asking for it and we’re happy to deliver it. We’ve always had smaller number of SKUs than some of our competitors and we think there is a clear differentiation through the range from the N130 to the N510.”
